Carlo Calì è nato a Portici (Na) nel 1941, quando è deceduto, nell’anno 2003, si trovava nella casa di cura per anziani “Villa delle Querce” di Nemi (RM) dal 1995.
I suoi quadri hanno tutti un piccolo formato perché Calì non riusciva a trovare altri supporti su cui dipingere se non piccoli cartoncini che recuperava chiedendoli ad alcune operatrici sue amiche.
Le opere propongono eventi concreti della sua vita, oppure storie e sogni, che gli piaceva raccontare perdendosi nei particolari e che venivano lasciate incomplete, perché, come egli stesso diceva, non gli piaceva mettere la parola fine ai suoi racconti pittorici.
Carlo Calì era come un cantastorie che, per sopravvivere nel presente, recuperava dal passato una narrazione di sé diversa dal racconto spersonalizzante dell’istituzione.
La sua risorsa creativa sembrerebbe anche un modo per rendersi assente alla solitudine del presente, recuperando la vena artistica che aveva quando da giovane dipingeva  nella sua bottega artigiana.

Carlo Calì was born in Portici (NA) in 1941. When he died in 2003 he was staying in the nursing home “Villa delle Querce” in Nemi (RM), where he had first arrived in 1995.
His paintings are all small sized because Calì could not find other materials to paint on, except these little paper sheets that were given to him by some of his friends among the operators.
His works represent real events of his life or tales and dreams that he liked to tell, losing himself in the smaller details and that were always left incomplete, since he didn’t like to put an end to his artistic productions.
Carlo Calì was like a storyteller that, in order to survive the present, looked back in time and choose a different narration from the depersonalizing one promoted by institution.
His creative resource would also seem a way to evade the solitude of the present, gaining again the artistic pull that drove him as a boy, when he painted in his atelier.
