fiducia in me stesso e negli altri.”
in collegio.
NICOLA FANIZZI
“This half-freedom moment and this artistic talent of mine,
together with the help offered by my friends, are slowly making
me fall in love with life again and helping me to gain back
confidence in myself and others”.
That is what Nicola Fanizzi wrote of himself when he was still
staying in the 16th Pavillon of the “Santa Maria della Pietà”
psychiatric hospital in Rome.
Nicola was born in Taranto on the 26th October 1948.
Orphaned, he attends many boarding schools where he finally
graduates with a “classic high school diploma”.
His sectioning in psychiatric institutes begins with his refusal of
the military service. He is reformed, but the hardships of life
push him to the limit and he tries to commit suicide when he is
only 22 by jumping off a scaffolding in a building yard. Since
then he alternates between different Pavillons of the Santa
Maria della Pietà.
His creativity bursts out under the form of writing and painting
as a resource against the crushing tedium of life in an asylum.
He is among the founder of two big creativity workshops in the
“Santa Maria della Pietà” hospital. After some years spent in a
psychiatric residence he is transferred to a nursing home
because of a grave illness inherited by the asylum. He dies
there in July 2015.
This exhibition shows both works of the psychiatric period and
more recent works where some recurring symbols stand out:
the flower, the clown, the house-church that reminds of the
long years spent in boarding schools.
