manicomio e poi in comunità protette.
SEBASTIANO TAFURI
“The tales of the Feathery Fowl” are the masterpiece of
Sebastiano Tafuri, “Master of Fine Arts” as he likes to define
himself. The “Feathery Fowl” represents an alias that the author
creates in order to live those experiences the life as a convict
keeps him from. Sebastiano, in the shoes of his Master of Fine
Arts identity, invents a tale to help his imprisoned self to stand
the pain.
“I've always wanted to have a wife, a home where I would
create a new family that should grant me the faculty of happily
serving the day and the following years” he states.
In the many tables that compose the tales we may observe the
painting-letters of his original alphabet that explores the
visual-graphic potential of its ordinary function and the
graphic-hearing potential of alphabetic writing.
Tafuri's artistic work originates a metamorphosis of the
alphabetic sign in a painting, a vision, a dream.
Sebastiano Tafuri is sentenced to six years in a judiciary asylum
in 1932, charged with “vizio parziale di mente” (partial mental
infirmity). He will spend all his life in reclusion, spacing from
judiciary psychiatric hospitals to asylums and communities.
He writes about his sectioning: “Thirty years that I could easily
describe as torture”.
