Il disegno esposto è stato fatto nella prigione di Florence in Arizona, quando l’autore era in regime carcerario di massima sicurezza per una intricata vicenda giudiziaria e rischiava la pena di morte poi commutata in una condanna a venti anni. Karl Louis Guillen ha iniziato a scrivere e disegnare per “evadere dall’inferno”.  Un suo libro dal titolo: “Il Tritacarne. Una voce dal carcere di Florence - Arizona” è stato pubblicato nel 1999 dall’Associazione Multimage di Torino, a cura del comitato per la difesa di Karl L. Guillen.
Per portare a termine il manoscritto a Guillen sono occorsi tre anni durante i quali, in periodiche ed improvvise perquisizioni della cella, il manoscritto veniva distrutto. All’autore sono state anche fratturate le dita delle mani per impedirgli di scrivere.
“Tritacarne è il sistema della giustizia, è la fabbrica della prigione, che fa dell’uomo insieme il suo prodotto ed il suo nemico. E’ il buco dal quale ricevo pranzo e cena, la cella d’isolamento di tre metri per poco più di due in cui vivo. E’ avere le manette tutti i giorni, è la gente cieca che ascolta e che non guarda, sente ma non aiuta”.
Karl Luois Guillen è uscito dal carcere nel 2013 e continua a battersi contro la pena di morte e per i diritti dei detenuti, contro il sistema carcerario privatizzato degli Stati Uniti, interamente basato sul profitto.

The exhibited painting was made in Florence State Prison, Arizona, where the author was being held in high security, risking a death penalty verdict for an intricate judiciary situation that was later changed for a 20 years detention sentence.
Karl Louis Guillen started to write and paint in order to “evade from hell”. One of his books with the title “The meat grinder. A voice from Florence -  Arizona penitentiary” was published in 1999 from Associazione Multimage di Torino, cured by the committee for the defence of Karl L. Guillen.
Ending the manuscript took Guillen three years, during which in periodical and sudden searches the work was repeatedly destroyed. In order to stop him from writing his hand fingers were also broken.
“Meat grinder is the justice system, the prison industry that makes of man both its product and its enemy. It’s the hole through which I get launch and dinner, the isolation cell of little more than three meters width where I live. It’s wearing handcuffs everyday, it’s blind people who listen but don’t look, that hear but don’t help”.
Karl Louis Guillen has been freed from prison in 2013 and keeps fighting against death penalty and for the prisoners’ rights, against the privatized penitentiary system of the USA, fully based on profit.
