“Sto bruciando senza resti. Ma troppe ustioni devastano lo
sguardo”.
figure che nascono mostrano un conflitto.
STEFANO BOMBACI
He spent the Eighties in special prisons. His intense interior
experience was transferred on hundreds of paintings, that he
inserted among the lines of the letters he exchanged with other
convicts. “I am burning with no leavings. But too many burns
devastate the stare” he writes to one of his correspondents. But
where do the figures that Bombaci unites to the letters come
from?
“When I paint I visualize something that is inside of me and the
figures that hence see the light show a conflict. A conflict in the
figure, but also a conflict in who stares. A struggle that cannot
be solved in the figure but that you, the observer, can now
solve because it moved into you. Because now it is your
conflict. There is no liberating catharsis, only struggle”.
As in many other works originated in prison, in Bombaci's
production the eye is a constant figure, reminding the
everlasting monitoring. On some of his works, however, the
presence of the surveillance is materialized through the
censorship stamp.
